Asian Bodywork Curriculum
The Ki-Atsu Asian Bodywork Program is designed to provide graduates from massage programs or current massage therapists with advanced training in bodywork modalities from the Far East. The program covers both eastern bodywork modalities such as Thai massage, shiatsu, and ashiatsu, and eastern energy modalities such as Reiki. The program is designed in such a way as to be suitable to provide initial training to a Bodyworker who is unfamiliar with Asian modalities, or to further the education of a Bodyworker who may have had some previous experience with Asian modalities. Upon successful completion f the program, the student will be able to offer his or her clients the following massage modalities:

The Ki-Atsu Asian Bodyworker program is a 150-hour, 15 credit course. There are eight classes within the Asian Bodyworker program. The course will consist of 16 class days, comprising 130 hours of lecture, demonstration and practice, and 20 internship hours. The Ki-Atsu Institute for Healing Arts is approved as an organization by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodyworkers to provide continuing education to therapists. The successful completion of the courses that make up the Asian Bodyworker program will count towards the therapist’s continuing education requirements for NCBTMB.

Thai Massage I
Class Hours: 16 Hours

Class Description
The Ki-Atsu Thai massage I class is designed to provide participants with a through groundwork of Thai Massage. The class covers the history of Thai Massage, the rule of traditional Thai Massage, the benefits for clients o Thai Massage, clients on whom Thai Massage should not be performed, the relevance of sen lines, safety considerations to protect both the client and therapist when performing Thai Massage, and a complete protocol for performing Thai Massage. Students are also taught ceremonial foot washing, mantra chanting, as well as a warm-up for the therapist using yoga asanas to prepare for performing Thai massage.
Thai Massage II

Course Description
Ki-Atsu Thai Massage Level 2 will build upon the foundation that Students will have developed in Ki-Atsu Thai Massage Level 1 and introduce the student to advanced concepts involved in Thai Massage and expand the number of Thai Massage techniques that the student may utilize during a treatment.
Ki-Atsu Thai Massage Level 2 begins with a short review of the concepts learned in the Level 1 class. Students then learn Chinese Meridian theory. Students learn the meridians for each organ, and how to trace the meridian on the body. Students also learn element theory and how to identify imbalances. The class then discusses the seven Chakras‘ and the location, element, and association of each. Students will learn how the meridian theory compares and contrasts with Sen lines. Students will be able to identify the benefits of both Sen lines and Meridians, and describe how each can be used to perform assessments on clients.
Students will then learn advanced Thai Massage Techniques, including sitting, side lying, and double leg techniques. Students will learn to perform eleven techniques in the sitting position, twenty-one techniques in the side lying position, and seven techniques performed with both legs. Students will learn how to perform each of these techniques, demonstrate proficiency in safely and effectively performing each of these techniques, and be able to identify the benefit of each of these techniques for the client. Students will also be able to identify clients for whom these techniques should not be utilized and the potential danger of improperly performing each technique.
Students will then learn a complete Thai Massage protocol that can be utilized for clients. Students will also be asked to design their own protocol. To successfully complete the course, students must demonstrate proficiency in performing the protocol safely and effectively and successfully complete a written exam.
Hot Stone Therapy

Class Description
Ki-Atsu Hot Stone Therapy is designed to provide participants with a thorough knowledge of how to perform a treatment utilizing hot stones and how to incorporate hot stone massage into other massage modalities. Students will learn the history of the use of hot stones in treatment, the benefits of hot stone therapy, clients group for which hot stone therapy should not be used, and a protocol for giving a hot stone treatment. Te use of essential oils and Chakra stones during a hot tone massage will also be covered.
Reiki I

Course Description
Ki-Atsu Reiki Level I is designed to instruct the student in the history, uses, and techniques in this energy healing modality. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to use the title of Reiki practitioner, Level I. The course will familiarize the student with what Reiki is, the history of Reiki, the major figures in the history of Reiki, the rules and traditions involved in the practice of Reiki, the application of Reiki on both human and nonhuman subjects, and how to conduct a Reiki session, and the hand positions used to perform Reiki.
Reiki II

Course Description
Ki-Atsu Reiki Level II builds upon the foundation in Reiki that the student developed in Reiki Level I to further the student’s knowledge of Reiki. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to use the title or Reiki Practitioner, Level II. The course will introduce the student to the two Reiki symbols used when performing treatments. The students will learn how to use Reiki to perform distance healing, and the symbol used for distance healing. The course will also instruct the student about the Seven Chakras, the color associated with each Chakra and what emotions and physical manifestations are associated with each Chakra.
Shiatsu

Course Description
The Shiatsu course offered at Ki-Atsu is designed to provide the student with a complete overview of the theory, concepts and techniques of this massage modality. The students will learn about the concepts of Ki energy and the pathways that Ki travels through the body called meridians. The students will learn the theory of how this energy may become blocked or imbalanced in the body, and how this imbalance can lead to physical manifestation. The students will learn each of the Meridian pathways, and how to test each pathway for imbalance. The students will also learn how to perform assessments on the hips, feet, legs, arms, hands, face, neck, chest, and abdomen. Students will learn how to perform an assessment on the client and questions to include in the assessment to help the therapist identify the best techniques to use for the client. The student will learn all of the hands on techniques and movements performed in a shiatsu session; the students will practice and be able to perform these techniques safely and effectively.
ASHIATSU-BAREFOOT RE-ALIGNMENT TECHNIQUE

Course Description
The Ki-Atsu Ashiatsu class (also known as the Ki-Atsu Barefoot Realignment Technique) is designed to train the student in performing the ancient art of ashiatsu, which is performed by the therapist with their feet, while balancing themselves with bars mounted to the ceiling. The course covers the techniques of ashiatsu, viewing the clients posture for deviations, the Myofascial planes of the body, how the techniques of ashiatsu can address postural deviations, safety considerations for the when performing these techniques, contraindications for the therapist and the client. The class also covers yoga and Pilates based exercises that the therapist can practice to prepare for the modality and prevent injury.
Business Ethics for Massage Therapists

Course Description
Ki-Atsu Business and Professional Ethics for Massage Therapists is a Six-hour course that provides the student with a comprehensive overview of the role of ethics in the massage industry. The teaching methods include lecture, a manual, group discussion, and a self-assessment questionnaire to guide the student in developing a firm understanding of their personal ethics, the importance of ethical behavior as a businessperson, and the importance of ethical behavior as a healthcare professional.
The course begins with the student being provided with the definitions of the terms that will be used in the course. The student is the presented with a brief synopsis of many of the schools of ethical thought, as well as a brief introduction to the philosopher who is considered the founder of that school of thought. Students then participate in a group discussion where the Student is asked to identify which school of thought they feel most aligns with their personal code of ethics, and what the strengths and weaknesses of that particular school of thought is.
The course then examines the role of ethics in business today. The student will learn about the importance of a code of ethics to any major business, and will participate in a discussion to identify the reasons why a code of ethics is important to an organization. The students will then Learn about the role of ethics in a profession. The students will be provided a copy of the code of ethics of three major professional organizations for massage therapists, NCBTMB, AMTA, ABMP. These three codes of ethics will be examined during the class, and the students will participate in a discussion to determine the similarities in the code of ethics of these organizations, and why these similarities are important.
Following the examination of the code of ethics, the course will then discuss boundaries, and how the establishing and maintaining of boundaries can assist in the therapist in establishing and ethical business and profession. The student will learn about the concepts of transference and counter transference, and how both can be prevented through the establishment of firm boundaries. The student will also learn how boundaries can enhance professional image and promote good business practices. Students then participate in a group discussion to identify where their boundaries are in their practice and how their practice may improve with changes in boundaries.
The final lecture portion of the course entails a description of the recent HIPPA laws, and how these laws are affecting the healthcare industry. Students will learn the how these new laws might effect their interaction with other healthcare providers. Students will then be given an opportunity to ask questions about the HIPPA laws.
In the final portion of the course, students are asked to fill out a self-examination form. The questions ask the student to define what ethics mean to them, and give the student clear concepts of their personal ethics. A group discussion is then conducted to give the students a chance to discuss their point of view, and be exposed to the point of view of others.
